  1. Word i want In on This!!

  2. so… emcees give Sterby their songs so that he can make the profit?
    pretty good scam

  3. the concept either has value to you or it doesn’t. So Green Lantern, Tony Touch, and all the big name DJ’s who helped break Eminem, 50 Cent, and countless others were running a scam too? Sterby Rock is a big supporter of local artists. It’s an open forum here so you are entitled to share your opinion no matter have incorrect it is.

  4. the emcee pays for the beat
the emcee pays for the studio time
the emcee wrote the song and owns the copyright
so if you want to sell my song you gotta pay me a licensing fee

  5. im down for this! sounds like a good idea here

  6. Scam? Are you serious? How much money could he possibly make off this? enough to buy a couple beers at the bar? You know It does cost money to print and burn copies of this cd. I don’t think anyone has the intention to get rich off this cd but I do think its a dope idea for local emcees.

  7. Do contributing artists get CDs at cost? or some sort of discount if you buy in bulk?

  8. everyone around here is absolutely clueless

  9. lets see, by giving sterby your song, you get free exposure/promotion.
he isnt asking for you to pay him to use what he has built to put your music out to listeners who probably havent heard you!
put it this way if u order a thousand run and sell 1000 copies then this isnt for you.
if you need to be heard and dj sterbyrock has a spot for a track of yours, then catch some free recognition.

let sterby take any profit he makes. he has an audience that he is exposing you to for nothing. if anything sterby should take a fee to get on it. he is doing everyone a favor.
that said i will send sterby a track

  10. oh, i get it… so the DJ does the rapper a favor by exposing their music
the promoter does the rapper a favor by giving them a stage
no wonder RI hip hop scene is in SHAMBLES. LMAO

  11. i dunno are your trying to build a following or eat off one you already have? it makes all the difference.
you wouldnt rock a sold out show for free?

  12. One of the reasons the scene is in “shambles” is people like you constantly hating on everything that goes down, I know everyone has the right to be a critic but like Mortal said this is what you call PROMO. Ever give out a free sampler or songs online? Same thing, wider scale, most respected DJ in 401. Get over it, this is a awesome idea and should have been done years ago.

  13. hmmm.. wow. i didnt really think this would be an issue for anyone. I figured people would want to be part of something like this for the exposure. The cd is going to be cheap, just enough for me to break even on the cds and cases and support the sterbyrock drinking fund. I guess when i comes down to it if someone doesnt like the idea they dont have to submit a track. simple right? but just dont be all sad when the mix is fireeeeeeee…
    woooooooooofffffffff

    love you all,
    Sterbyrock*
    (aka dj Shamblerock*)

  14. Lemme know if you’re going to be offering bulk quantities. Might wanna grab a dozen or so to sell @ rhymeCulture events. thanks…

  15. Is this Samiam greeneggsandham guy even serious?
So he expects the DJ in this case DJ Sterby Rock too not only listen too all the tracks submitted, pick the top ones, get the blank cds, cases, covers and then put it all together and even pay for the cds too? This guys a joke.
It seemed like a simple request to the people that if you would like to get on a 401hiphop.com cd to submit a track and this guy turns it into a project. Samiam are you on every mix cd out here, that you are too good for this one?
Its free promotion, free exposure, gives people a chance to hear it besides the people in your click.

This cd was and is a very good idea, its going to let people hear some of the talent that is out here.

    randinothegreat1 says:

Dj scam I am!!!!! I think u lost this one….this cd is a scam??? Are u serious??….hahahah sounds like he’s mad sterby came up with the 401hiphop cd before scamiam did………..all I got to say is I got faith in the most respected dj in the 401 to put out a classic 401 mixtape…..so haters keep hating ur making the cd better already!!!!

  17. Licensing fee? Sure, we can do that.

I pay .091 per copy manufactured for a license I got to include “For What Its Worth” by Buffalo Springfield on a compilation I helped put out. Plus a $15 fee to have the sync house broker the deal. So that’s roughly $106 per 1000 copies, depending on the current statutory rate is at the time. Oh, also, if the compilation sells over 50,000 units, Stephen Stills (the writer) is entitled to an additional percentage per copy sold over that number.

Since Sterby is doing up 100 copies for the initial press, that would be a 10th of that rate, or $10.60 (if we include the brokerage fee, which we don’t need really, since we’re negotiating directly, but I’ve got money to burn, so what the hell). So if you contribute a track to this mixtape, I will personally shell out the licensing fee that would be due to you (assuming you don’t believe your track is worth more than one of the most celebrated classic rock songs of all time) so as to not tax the resources of Sterby, Mortal, or 401hiphop.com.

I’ll do it for the love. For the community. For hip hop. For the shambles. Because I don’t think the scene should be punished by not getting to hear your track just because of some red tape nonsense.

Incidentally, could we hear your music? Linkz plz. Thx.

    Sincerely,
    Absolutely Clueless

  18. Sterby is going to net at least a 14 g-notes off of this compilation alone. These song’s are going to be used in multiple feature films and I’ve heard word that BMI has agreed to relieve S. Davis of his efforts (for a handsome sum) handle all licensing, and install this mixtape into a 2010 global promotional campaign (eat it ASCAP). Get a lawyer and know what your thuperthtar producerths thampled (I just made you think with a lithhhhsssppp).

    Your getting Jux’d (thh)

    -Falside :(

  19. the statutory rate is 9.1 cents to include songs
that have ALREADY been COMMERCIALLY released
    on CD or digital download.

Microsoft is paying independent artists 50 cents a track
to give their songs away in a free download

  20. “the statutory rate is 9.1 cents to include songs
that have ALREADY been COMMERCIALLY released
    on CD or digital download.”

I’m sure Sterby and Mortal would be glad to make an exception to the ‘exclusives’ rule to include a track from you that has already been commercially released on CD or via digital download. The offer is still on the table. $11 just waiting to be claimed.

‘Microsoft is paying independent artists 50 cents a track
to give their songs away in a free download’

With all due respect to Ster & Mortal, if you think that the resources of Microsoft and the scope of the promotion involved with their free downloads are comparable to the 401hiphop.com mixtape, I really don’t see how we can continue this conversation with any hope of arriving anywhere constructive.

And again, how about some links to check out your music? Or posting under the name that you are known by? The rest of us are here out in the open. The powers-that-be will tell you that I’m as critical of the Providence hip hop scene as anyone, but I stand behind my statements when I choose to make them.

Unless there’s actually a DJ Samiam making noise around these parts, and I’m unaware. In that case I apologize for my ignorance as to your rep.

  21. You’re missing the point entirely.

Once a track has been released commercially
you don’t need the permission of the original song writer to include it on your compilation
you just need to pay Harry Fox the statutory rate

My man J.Period gets paid to put out “best of” mixtapes (by the label)
right before an artist drops their new project
but he uses older songs, original remixes, and exclusive a capella verses
    to create something “entirely” original
Nobody gives their “banger” away. That’s just asinine.

I’m not saying Sterby couldn’t do a great job at something similar
but the project was not really explained at all
DJ Clue shouts that annoying “cluminati” over and over again to protect the artist

This garbage about …. poor Sterby has to listen to allll these tracks
and make cds AND the cover..
hello?! that’s the fuking job of putting out a quality product!!!!

    my label (self-owned and operated)
spent $5,000 to put out songs on vinyl and get them out to college DJz all over the country
How many of you RI knuckleheads can say you’ve invested $5,000 in your entire “career”

    Dont’ matter who I am
I am the voice of truth

  22. Sigh.

    It’s Sneaky Pete.

  23. detective Sherlock iz on the case
    give that boi an apple!

  24. HA! just like the good ol’ days. when’s the deadline?

  25. Yo Pete….If You Don’t like It, Don’t Participate..Save All Your “Hit Records” Cause Every Dj Is Spinning Them….AAAAAAHHHH HA HA AA HA AHA HA AHA HA AHA HA ….Fuck Outta Here!

  26. i had the #2 record on college radio twice

  27. Sneaky Pete is straight trash, homie.

  28. why am i trash?

  29. you obviously havent listened to your own music

  30. OK … people. this thread was a really good debate. Regardless how you feel about it. It was an honest debate, that was, for the most part, pretty mature. Let’s not let it turn into a hate fest now. Let’s keep it on topic! Thanks in advance.

  31. it’s cool. everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Sterby is presenting an opportunity for local emcees to be heard. I’m not arguing that.
Do I think it’s right to be asking permission to sell it? no.
but if you wanna support him and his drinking habit
then I’d say go for it.

  32. @wet grass – that’s gotta be the dumbest thing i’ve ever heard

  33. @Stinky peter – No hate i agree With Wet Grass….And for The record I hope Sterby Does more Shit like This…Pete Be happy People Are even Tryin to Save Hip Hop In Rhode Island Like That…As Much As you “Try” And As “Great As Your music Is” You cant Save It alone…

  35. no ur right. I’ve never actually listened

  36. Marshall hit me up and told me about this. Good shit on givin’ other local heads a way to be heard by people that might not have heard them yet. I’ll be checkin’ this shit out when it drops.
