PDP is the Best HIP-HOP ACT in Providence

Poorly Drawn People — Dox, Storm Davis, Entity, Reason, and DJ Sterby Rock — are crafting an aesthetic, and monstrous reputation, for the best damn hip-hop around. Davis, the de facto spokesman, attributes their success to a variety of factors, but one element in particular: “Ninety-eight percent of it has to do with the fact that we actually, sincerely don’t give a shit what anybody thinks,” says Davis. “Don’t get us wrong — we love validation, praise, applause, and whatever else people want to give us. But if we’re happy with it, we don’t care what anyone thinks.”

PDP met through mutual friends in the area hip-hop network. “The more time we spent together, the more respect we developed for each other,” says Davis. “Every time we played, I would get wowed. We thought about it: among us we could have four teams of one, or one team of four. That’s how we came together.” And the union grows more potent and effective each time they open their mouths. Their latest mix tapes, including Shoot for the Stars, Hit the Ceiling and Nothing Stays Gold, have been flying out and signs point to some serious success. “There’s no shortage of good feelings about ourselves,” admits Davis. “People wonder how you can fit this many gigantic egos into one room!” Many in the hip-hop arena feel that, despite those expectations, PDP is knocking on a special door. “We really want to be put on the field with the best, to see how we measure up” says Davis.

So what is PDP looking for? “Right now, time and money are the only things holding us back.”

  4. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

lmao…you didn’t even read the article

  5. kozzwonNo Gravatar Says:

can someone please remove pete from my testes, this is about PDP not about you coming in flaming on people like you do every post…i read the article, and said congrats, nothing more, what are you trying to prove/start,really?

  6. Storm DavisNo Gravatar Says:

Kozz - thanks for the congrats. It is appreciated. Lorna Doom, an indie-rock-rap act I’m not too familiar with actually won last year. I had won the Best Album category, that may be what your thinking of.

Pete, if you’d read the rest of that sentence, you would have seen that I was referring to opinions on how we make the music, and that we do indeed appreciate any love that comes our way, but that we don’t change up what we do to gain approval. It looks like Kozz isn’t the one who didn’t read the article carefully.

If you’d like further clarification on what was a portion of a quote that made it into the paper, feel free to take a look at the blog at http://www.myspace.com/poorlydrawnpeople.

And Mortal - props on the phrasing of the headline there. I see what you’re doing, my brother ;)

  7. kozzwonNo Gravatar Says:

  9. kozzwonNo Gravatar Says:

My bad for the misinterpretation of your statement, Pete. I thought you were going a different direction there, and that was my mistake.

  13. The Mic MonstaNo Gravatar Says:

No Doute…..Watch How Crazy I Get Down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

Congrats on receiving that honors PDP!
The little bit i know about you personally Storm
I admire and respect. Yall put in work and it shows.

    Yall deserve that recognition.

But the truth is. Yall don’t need any outside praise or
    award cuz you manifested it.

PDP Fans love them because they found
their own voice and style and kept at it
in the face of opposition and
will no doubt continue to as well.

    If i’m guilty of anything
it’s trying to “rush thru a lesson”
that can only be taught by time itself.

See yall at the Show Friday
let’s make it a great one

  15. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

I was actually the 2007 recipient of “Best smelling HipHop act in Providence” but… yaknow, your award is pretty good too

  16. The Mic MonstaNo Gravatar Says:

  17. MortalNo Gravatar Says:

all comments should be about PDP and their greatness. go back to the other posts to discuss the battle. Keep the PDP bliss in this post.

  18. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

    seriously…

    show some respekt
and TRY TO keep my name out of your mouf
    for like one day

  19. JotsNo Gravatar Says:

props to PDP for the award - i can’t think of anyone else more deserving. and wow, storm davis - a humble member of the RI hip-hop community?! i didn’t think those existed. thank you for being a REAL role model for youngins like me trying to make our own mark in the scene - and showing emcees how they SHOULD be acting. i hope our paths cross in the future. congrats again

  20. sboNo Gravatar Says:

showin love to pdp, really fealin your sound and originalty.. keep bangin

  21. MFRNo Gravatar Says:

    kudos PDP

  22. ExSaviorNo Gravatar Says:

PDP’s been performing solid for the past two years I’ve been doing my thing. They definitely sound different compared to a lot of crews that end up saying the same shit. Much respect…

and after reading a few replies…ya’ll REALLY need to battle it out lol.

  23. Jim BrowsNo Gravatar Says:

No dis to PDP but best hip hop act in Providence??? Really??? I kno some who’d disagree. Please continue on…

  24. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

“You know SOME who’d disagree” –what kind of BS comment is that?
The Voting happened –PDP took it
whether you agree or not is irrelevant

“BEST” is always a judgement call –but can you tell me
someone more worthy of this distinction?

    Please continue on…to what?

  25. Jim BrowsNo Gravatar Says:

Please continue on with the debate of that title…. and YES I could think of a hip hop act in RI MORE deserving! Like I said no dis to PDP. I like all of them personally but MY opinion IS relevant! Ya kno why? We live in a democracy and they didn’t get my vote this time around.

  26. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

    well, go ahead then

what’s with all the half steppin?

    make your statement already

  27. Jim BrowsNo Gravatar Says:

I voted for Chachi! Only one RI hip hop act in Providence did more than him and that was Sage.

  28. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

Sage is in a league of his own

From my personal experience…just been on the 401 scene
    about a year now

PDP is better organized and more open
    to collaboration

  29. Jim BrowsNo Gravatar Says:

If you’ve just been on the 401 scene for a year how can u make the statement that “PDP is better organized and more open to collaboration”? I kno way too many ppl who’ve been out to Polyphonix on Mondays or recorded at Beat Box Studio’s.

  30. kozzwonNo Gravatar Says:

if i had to pick between who was better, wether it being pdp or chachi,i wouldnt pick, their both awesome artists, but i meen the people of rhode island voted,so their really shouldnt be a debate who the people think was the best act in RI was this year.

  31. sneakypeteNo Gravatar Says:

    I’m sayin ME , PERSONALLY

    MY INTERACTIONS WHAT I’VE SEEN/EXPERIENCED

I’ve been on the same bill with Sage and PDP in the last year
but for some reason Chachi and I have yet to collaborate

  32. Jim BrowsNo Gravatar Says:

As long as their are emcees vying for shine there will ALWAYS be a debate! That’s it for me on this topic big ups to PDP!!! Keep banging out!

  33. kozzwonNo Gravatar Says:

what does collaberating with the artists have to do with how good they are i dont get it.

  34. MortalNo Gravatar Says:

PDP has done more than Chachi. They have put out MANUFACTURED PRODUCT. So has CasUno. Shawn Jackson, Time MAchine, and DJ Mekalek are also doing big things.

  35. doxNo Gravatar Says:

    Hey everyone.

Just to be clear, I - and I believe everyone in PDP shares this sentiment - respect the hell out of Chachi. He works hard (and has for years), makes great music and has given back in a number of ways. He’s also managed to achieve some great opportunities. 106 & Park and Vibe Magazine come to mind immediately.

In fact, when I told my father about the Phoenix Poll, his response was, “That’s too bad. I actually voted for Chachi.” So it’s not just PDP that loves Chachi, it’s PDP’s family.

Same goes for every artist in the poll, and most artists in this state.

Sorry Mortal, I know I’m no fun. :)

Thanks for all the comments in this thread.

  36. MortalNo Gravatar Says:

Dox I would expect nothing less from you then the class and tact that you always display in all interactions whether its in real life or the interweb. Good Shit.

Everyone Loves Chachi. I respect his hustle. My son is a huge fan. He wears his shirt to school. I was just responding to the idea that Chachi has done more musically than you guys. PDP has reached a goal he has yet to accomplish.

  37. Storm DavisNo Gravatar Says:

Dox’s dad voted for Chachi, Cas voted for PDP, and I voted for Jon Hope. And Joeywonk wrote in Joeywonk. Unbelievable.

Anyone who says this scene is all politics should note that the politicians have absolutely no idea what do to do when election day comes around. Ha.

As Dox said, thanks to everyone who posted in this thread, and I think I’ve made my love for all of the other artists that were nominated in the poll well-known in the past, so that goes without saying.

  38. FalsideNo Gravatar Says:

i wrote in documentary dan, and big doug.
